The Estate
Domaine Ganevat is an emblematic winery of the Jura vineyard, located in Rotalier, south of Lons-le-Saunier. The Ganevat family has been cultivating vines since the 17th century, but it was Jean-François Ganevat, who returned in 1998 after an experience in Burgundy with Jean-Marc Morey, who brought the estate to its current renown. With deep respect for traditions and native grape varieties, he started a biodynamic conversion in the early 2000s, breaking with the use of oenological inputs to return to natural practices.
The estate covers about 13 hectares, divided into around forty micro-parcels nestled on the blue marl, grey marl, and calcareous schist soils of the southern Revermont. This mosaic of soils, combined with demanding and manual viticulture, allows for a precise expression of Jura grape varieties such as Savagnin, Trousseau, Poulsard, Chardonnay, and Enfariné. Each cuvée offers a faithful and unique interpretation of its place of origin.
Today, Jean-François Ganevat, supported by his sister Anne, continues to produce lively, refined, and highly complex wines that seduce enthusiasts and sommeliers around the world. The estate also offers cuvées under the name “Anne & Jean-François Ganevat,” produced through high-end négociant work with grapes from friendly growers, always vinified with the same artisanal rigor. Their uncompromising approach — indigenous yeasts, very little or no sulfur, long élevages — makes them one of the most respected producers in the Jura, if not in France.
The Wine
The Chalasses Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from old vines, often centenarian, cultivated under certified biodynamic farming. The vineyard is located on complex soils mixing blue marl, grey marl, and schist, in the Chalasses area of Rotalier. The vines are tended with extreme care: no herbicides, light tillage, gentle plant-based treatments (horsetail, nettle), and very low yields to maximize concentration and typicity. The estate favors a respectful approach to the soil and biodiversity, with careful manual attention throughout the year.
Tasting
The nose reveals delicate aromas of ripe white fruits, accompanied by floral notes and a slight mineral touch. The palate is elegant, supple, and perfectly balanced, with a lovely freshness supported by a fine mineral framework. The finish is long, saline, and reveals a refined subtlety that invites slow appreciation.
