The Estate
Château Smith Haut Lafitte dates back to the 14th century, but it was in the 18th century that George Smith, a wine merchant of Scottish origin, gave it both its name and reputation. Classified as a Graves Grand Cru in 1959, it has maintained its strong renown through the centuries. Since 1990, the estate has belonged to Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who have modernized and revitalized it, bringing a vision that blends tradition and innovation.
Located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the vineyard covers around one hundred hectares of exceptional gravelly soils, rich in pebbles deposited by the Garonne River thousands of years ago. These soils ensure excellent drainage and allow the region’s emblematic grape varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot for reds, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Gris for whites—to fully express their complexity. The temperate microclimate, combined with precise viticulture, gives the wines remarkable balance and depth.
Today, Smith Haut Lafitte is internationally acclaimed for the finesse and longevity of both its red and white wines. The estate is also a pioneer in environmental practices, combining biodynamics, scientific research, and sustainable innovation. The Cathiard family has further developed a unique ecosystem around the château, including the luxury hotel Les Sources de Caudalie and high-end wine tourism initiatives. Smith Haut Lafitte embodies the perfect alliance between Bordeaux heritage and responsible modernity.
The Wine
Vinification: After a double sorting before and after destemming, the whole grapes are fermented in tank. The extraction of tannins and color is achieved through punch downs and/or pump overs. Maceration then follows at 26-28°C for a duration specific to each tank and is determined by tasting..
Aging: 14 months in barrels (20% new wood) made in their integrated cooperage.
Tasting
It is a deep wine with character. The nose is expressive with notes of red and black fruits, along with a hint of chocolate and spices. The palate is medium-bodied with quality tannins and a lovely creaminess.
