Château La Conseillante
Château La Conseillante
The name La Conseillante has appeared for nearly 300 years, when Catherine Conseillan, an influential merchant from Libourne, acquired the property and gave it her name. She then developed the vineyard to reach 12 hectares. In 1871, the Nicolas family became the owner of the estate and, for five generations, has passed on the same desire to preserve the vineyard and its identity. Since 2003, Bertrand and Jean-Valmy Nicolas represent the fifth generation and continue this family story, with a constant pursuit of excellence and precision.
La Conseillante occupies a unique position in Pomerol, at the intersection of different soil nuances. The 12 hectares are divided into 16 plots, forming a true mosaic of terroirs, with clays to the northeast and gravel to the southwest. The soils are composed of 60% gray clays and 40% sandy gravels, with subsoils marked by iron oxides. The vineyard is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc: the former finds in the clays the conditions that favor its creamy texture and power, while the Cabernet Franc brings freshness and spices to the more gravelly terroirs.
Today, La Conseillante continues a careful and committed viticulture, notably with ISO 14001 and HVE 3 certifications. Since 2012, a parcel-based winery allows for the separate vinification of the different plots in order to preserve their unique characteristics. The grand wine is sought after for its extreme finesse and smoothness, with a bouquet marked by violet, peony, red fruits, and spices. On the palate, it stands out for its creamy and silky character, its freshness, and its soft tannins; with age, it notably develops notes of black truffle.
