The Producer
Old Château Certan, one of the oldest estates in Pomerol, finds its origins at the very beginning of the 18th century. At that time, the Demay family established a vast vineyard in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, which was still little exploited. Over time, the estate gained a reputation for the remarkable finesse of its wines, before being taken over in 1924 by the Thienpont family, originally from Belgium. Since then, three generations have succeeded each other with the same requirements, establishing Old Château Certan as one of the most emblematic crus of the appellation.
Located on the famous Pomerol plateau, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir composed of deep clays, black clays, and ancient gravel, offering a rare diversity in the appellation. This mosaic of soils allows for the perfect expression of the estate's two flagship grape varieties: Merlot, which brings smoothness and richness, and Cabernet Franc, the house's signature, which imparts freshness, complexity, and tension. The vines, meticulously cared for, are cultivated in a reasoned manner to preserve the natural balance and enhance this unique terroir.
Today led by Alexandre Thienpont and his son Guillaume, Vieux Château Certan embodies a style of classic elegance, combining depth, aromatic finesse, and exceptional aging potential. Renowned for its natural balance and subtle aromas, the wine is considered one of the most sophisticated in Pomerol. Vintage after vintage, the Thienpont family continues its quest for excellence, producing wines that rank among the most sought after in Bordeaux.
The Wine
Viticulture relies on precise parcel management, with meticulous soil work and controlled yields. The grapes are hand-harvested at perfect ripeness, then sorted to ensure impeccable raw material. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by aging in oak barrels that refine the structure and complexity of the wine.
Tasting
The wine opens with a refined bouquet blending black fruits, violet, and light spicy notes. The palate is ample, silky, and perfectly balanced, driven by a dense texture and a very expressive Cabernet Franc. The finish, long and precise, reveals a noble freshness and great aromatic depth.
