The Estate

Historically a tenant farm of the Dukes of Brissac, the current Château was renovated at the end of the 19th century by a sister of the Duke, Princess d’Arenberg. She used it as a vacation residence, appreciated its wines, and hosted many friends there, including Joseph Kessel. The estate was later sold in 1952 to a family of winemakers, who helped establish the reputation of Château Soucherie’s wines throughout the region. Since 2007, the Beguinot family has been guiding the destiny of this exceptional property, with a constant commitment to improving quality.

The vineyard, covering approximately 28 hectares, is spread across three sites. Around the Château, 22 hectares are located on a schist hillside facing south and sheltered from northern winds. The estate's predominant grape variety, Chenin, is vinified exclusively as a single varietal in their Anjou Blancs, Savennières, Coteaux du Layon, and Premier Cru Chaume. For Anjou Reds, Cabernet Franc, grown on the hillsides, can be blended with the highly local and surprising Grolleau, which adds fruitiness and roundness. Gamay, on the other hand, brings crunchiness and freshness to the rosés.

The development of Botrytis Cinerea in the form of noble rot is encouraged by alternating dry and humid periods. Nighttime humidity, the cool morning breeze from the Layon River that borders the estate, morning dew, and mist from the Layon valley stimulate the fungus, while the afternoon autumn sun helps limit its growth. These specific conditions create the ideal environment to produce a great sweet wine.

Terroir: Vines around 30 years old on clay-schist and schist-sandstone soils in the commune of Beaulieu-sur-Layon.

Harvest: Hand-harvested with selective picking in the vineyard.

Vinification: Pneumatic pressing, slow natural fermentation, and aging in vats for 12 months.

Analysis: 12% alcohol, 90g/L residual sugars.

Yield: 20 HL/ha.

The 30-year-old vines are cultivated with respect for the environment, without synthetic products for plant protection or chemical fertilizers. The entire vineyard has been certified Organic by ECOCERT since the 2022 vintage.

Fresh, lively, and delicious, this wine is best enjoyed chilled (8°C/10°C) as an aperitif or paired with:

Salads with confit gizzards and duck breasts

Cheeses such as Bleu d’Auvergne, Fourme d’Ambert, Roquefort

Pear and almond paste tarts, or tarts with apricots or rhubarb.

Best consumed within the next 10 years.

Provenance and storage of our wines

All wines and other products come directly from the estates or their exclusive distributors. In some cases, rare and hard-to-find bottles have been purchased from private collectors or professionals. Our expertise guarantees the quality and authenticity of the bottles.

These are stored in the cellar, on Fondaudège Street, in their entirety. The most fragile and rare bottles benefit from aging in a Liebherr or La Sommelière wine cellar.
