The Producer
The Domaine Mas de Rey, located in Camargue, is a place rich in history dating back to the 12th century, when the Order of the Templars established a temple there. In the 17th century, a chapel was built on the foundations of the temple, serving as a stop on the way to Santiago de Compostela. In 1843, the estate dedicated itself to viticulture after having cultivated cereals and raised silkworms. Since 2012, the Cornille family has undertaken the renovation of the farmhouse according to traditional Provençal methods, reviving this historical heritage.
The vineyard of Domaine Mas de Rey spans 110 hectares divided into two main terroirs. Around the estate, sandy-loamy soils host the oldest Marselan in the world. On the Crau plateau, stony clay-limestone soils welcome grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Syrah. A pioneer and environmentally conscious, the estate cultivates more than fifteen grape varieties, including rare and local varieties like Chasan, Caladoc, and Marselan. Since 2020, a conversion to organic farming is underway to preserve biodiversity and soil health.
The winemaking at Domaine Mas de Rey is carried out with precision to preserve the integrity of the aromas. The grapes intended for rosé and white wines are cooled and pressed quickly after harvest, then fermented at low temperatures in inert tanks. The red wines are fermented in concrete tanks, with prolonged macerations and regular pump-overs and rackings for optimal extraction of compounds. Some premium cuvées benefit from 12 months of aging in French oak barrels, adding complexity and aging potential to the wines.
