The Estate
Max de Pourtalès returned to his Bordeaux roots with the acquisition in 1998 of Château Doyac located in the Haut-Médoc appellation. His wife Astrid left the New York theater scene to accompany him on this new adventure. Together, they fell in love with this magnificent vineyard, whose origins are ancient, as evidenced by the "Bordeaux and its wines" from Editions Féret in 1850.
Significant renovation work has been carried out both in the vineyards and in the cellars. Following the expansion of the vineyard in 2009, Max de Pourtalès had a new bottling cellar and a new barrel cellar built to optimize wine production. Additionally, a tasting room equipped with a professional pizza oven allows for hosting both journalists and tourists who enjoy wine and pizza. Everything is in place to enable this vineyard to express itself under the best possible conditions.
“My philosophy,” specifies Max de Pourtalès, “is not to make overly extracted wines as the whole world knows how to do, but rather to obtain fine and elegant wines. This does not prevent having substance, but it is essential to respect balance and freshness, everything that characterizes the great wines of Bordeaux.” Surrounded by their team and with the advice of their oenologists Eric Boissenot and Marco Balsimelli, Max and Astrid de Pourtalès seek each year the blends that will best respect the vintage and reveal the personality of the wine from Château Doyac.
The Wine
Made from clusters of young Cabernet Franc grapes pressed at harvest and aged in stainless steel tanks.
