The Producer
Le Clos du Marquis is a historic property of the Saint-Julien vineyard, owned by the Delon family, who have owned the famous Château Léoville Las Cases for several generations. Long presented as the "second wine" of Léoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis is now considered a wine in its own right, coming from distinct plots and terroirs separate from those of the Grand Vin.
The vineyard of Clos du Marquis is located on the characteristic gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, with a presence of gravel allowing for excellent drainage and promoting the ripeness of Cabernet Sauvignon. Its location, slightly set back from the estuary compared to the grand estate of Léoville Las Cases, gives it a different personality, generally softer and immediately accessible.
Cabernet Sauvignon generally dominates the blend, accompanied by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Clos du Marquis primarily seeks balance between depth, freshness, and precision: black fruit and cherry are often accompanied by notes of graphite, licorice, and sometimes a minty touch. The palate is dense yet elegant, supported by fine and tight tannins and a beautiful mineral tension. The best vintages offer remarkable aging potential.
