The Producer

Founded in the early 19th century, Château Palmer is named after the British general Charles Palmer, who acquired the property in 1814 and greatly contributed to its reputation. At that time, the estate rapidly developed, and its wines were already competing with the greatest crus of the Médoc. In the official classification of 1855, the château was ranked Third Grand Cru Classé of Margaux, but its qualitative reputation has often placed it on par with the most prestigious second growths, or even beyond.

The vineyard extends over an exceptional terroir of deep gravelly rises typical of the Margaux appellation, perfectly drained and ideal for vine cultivation. A notable feature in the Médoc, the grape variety allocation gives significant importance to Merlot, which represents nearly half of the plantings, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. This composition gives Palmer wines a particularly velvety texture and an aromatic richness that distinguishes the estate's style.

The Wine

The Alter Ego comes from the vineyards of Château Palmer located on the gravelly slopes of the Margaux appellation, cultivated with entirely manual harvesting and a rigorous selection of grapes. The lots are vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks to preserve the identity of each plot. The extractions are carried out gently to favor the elegance and purity of the fruit. The wine is then aged for about 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new wood to maintain a more accessible and indulgent style than the grand vin.

Tasting

The Alter Ego of Château Palmer presents an elegant nose of ripe black fruits, violet, and sweet spices, accompanied by fine woody notes. On the palate, the attack is smooth and velvety, with beautiful freshness and fine tannins that support aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and licorice. The finish is harmonious and persistent, marked by the finesse and balance typical of the wines from the Margaux appellation.
