The Producer
Olivier Cazenave, an atypical figure in the Bordeaux vineyard, initially evolved outside the world of wine before entering it with passion in the 1990s. After gaining experience in commerce and distribution, he decided to venture into production and acquired Château de Bel in 2003, a small property located on the right bank of the Dordogne. His journey, blending curiosity, rigor, and freedom of expression, has led him to challenge the traditional codes of Bordeaux with a relaxed and artisanal approach.
Château de Bel is located in Arveyres, on a typical terroir of the region, between clays, silts, and some limestone outcrops. The vineyard, of modest size, is primarily planted with Merlot, the emblematic grape of the right bank, with some plots of Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The vineyard work is conducted with respect for the environment, with particular attention paid to soil vitality and the natural balance of the plots.
Olivier Cazenave vinifies wines with strong personality, often in micro-editions, and does not hesitate to experiment with indigenous yeasts, winemaking techniques from elsewhere, or low-intervention aging. His style is characterized by great drinkability, freshness, and a sincerity that appeals to both enthusiasts and professionals. Alongside Château de Bel, he also develops projects like the "Bel a Ciao" cuvée, a nod to his free spirit, and remains very involved in promoting a more human and accessible Bordeaux.
