The Producer
Château Mangot is a family-owned estate located in Saint-Émilion, at the gates of Castillon, currently managed by brothers Karl and Yann Todeschini. In this winemaking family active since the 1950s, each generation has enriched the estate's expertise and directed it towards more sustainable viticulture. In 2022, the estate reached a major milestone by being promoted to Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, rewarding decades of rigorous work in the vineyards and cellar.
The vineyard spans approximately 37 hectares in one block in Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, on clay-limestone soils rich in starry limestone and molasses. This geological diversity — including foot of the slope, hillsides, terraces, and plateaus — gives the wines great minerality, tension, and depth, while maintaining a silky expression thanks to the clay contribution. The favorable exposure and varied altitude optimize the ripeness of the grapes, primarily Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Château Mangot is today a model of integrated ecological viticulture. The estate has been certified organic since 2020 and is committed to a conversion to biodynamics, with Biodyvin certification completed in 2023, which means that biodynamic practices are now an integral part of vineyard management. This approach aims to enhance soil vitality, biodiversity, and vine health through the use of biodynamic preparations and natural methods, with minimal interventions in the cellar.
The Wine
After tasting the berries, the harvest is carried out by parcel area based on the grape variety, but also and especially on the terroir, altitude, exposure, and age of the vines. The goal: to express the maximum facets of the 21 parcels of Mangot!
Lot-by-lot vinification allows for the adaptation of extraction (pumping over, rack and return). Thus, it is possible to respect the integrity of each grape in its style and personality.
These fermentation tanks correspond to a specific terroir / grape variety and will be carefully isolated, after pressing, for malolactic fermentation.
Barrel aging is also adapted to each lot. Here too, the goal is to respect the fruit and the typicality of the grapes' origin. The barrels will then enhance the character of the wine and the terroir without diminishing its expression through exogenous scents and aromas.
A continuous tasting process over 2 years is then carried out, from the grape berry to the wine, in order to wisely choose the blend.
Tasting
Château Mangot offers menthol notes, with a slight floral thread, some hints of blackberries and pink berries. On the palate, the wine is juicy, slightly creamy, with remarkably fine tannins. To be kept for at least 10 years!
