Bandol

The Bandol AOC, recognized in 1941, covers about 1,500 hectares near the village of Bandol along the Mediterranean coast in the Var. It is famed for its powerful reds based on mourvèdre (minimum 50%), built for long aging. The region also produces structured gastronomic rosés and a few rare whites. Clay-limestone terraced soils ("restanques") and intense sun exposure yield wines with concentration, structure, and notes of garrigue, black fruits, and spice. Pairings: roast lamb, Provençal stew, spiced dishes, aged cheeses. Notable producers: Domaine Tempier, Château de Pibarnon, Domaine de la Bégude.
