Château Branaire-Ducru

The history of Château Branaire-Ducru

The history of Château Branaire-Ducru begins in 1680, when Jean-Baptiste Braneyre acquires part of the lands of the former Beychevelle estate, captivated by the exceptional potential of these gravel terroirs. His descendants built the château in 1824, before the property passed into the Ducru family. In 1855, the estate was recognized by the famous classification of the Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc and became the Fourth Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Julien. A new chapter opened in 1988 with the acquisition of the château by Patrick Maroteaux and his family, who undertook extensive renovation and modernization work. Since 2017, his son François-Xavier Maroteaux has continued this family story with the desire to fully reveal the potential of this great terroir of Saint-Julien.

A gravel terroir and a precision know-how

Located in the heart of the Médoc, between Margaux and Pauillac, Château Branaire-Ducru benefits from a remarkable terroir composed of gravel and pebbles deposited by the Garonne during the Quaternary. Its vineyard of 60 hectares stands out with about fifteen micro-terroirs, offering a great diversity of soils and exposures. The Cabernet Sauvignon, predominant in the grape variety, finds on these warm and well-drained gravels ideal conditions to reach optimal maturity, while the Merlot thrives more on clay soils. The blend is completed by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This parcel diversity is accompanied by increasingly precise winemaking work, particularly thanks to the new winery inaugurated in 2024, designed to allow for gravity-fed winemaking tailored to each parcel. The style of Branaire-Ducru thus rests on a quest for balance between fruit, freshness, and elegance, a characteristic signature of the estate.

Château Branaire-Ducru today

Today, Château Branaire-Ducru asserts itself as one of the major references of the Saint-Julien appellation and as a Grand Cru Classé particularly sought after by lovers of great Bordeaux wines. Under the direction of François-Xavier Maroteaux, the estate pursues a process of precision and continuous improvement, while strengthening its environmental commitment through certifications such as ISO 14001, High Environmental Value, and BeeFriendly. The great wine captivates with its elegant and harmonious expression of the Saint-Julien terroir, combining aromatic finesse, freshness, structure, and aging potential. With its second wine, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru, the property also offers another interpretation of its terroir. Between historical heritage, technical innovation, and respect for the environment, Château Branaire-Ducru today embodies a contemporary and demanding vision of Bordeaux's Grand Cru Classé.
