Château Caillou

The history of Château Caillou dates back to 1695, although the estate truly gained prominence during the 19th century under the ownership of Bordeaux wine merchant Louis Sarraute. In 1855, it was awarded the prestigious status of Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the famous Classification of Sauternes and Barsac. In 1909, Joseph Ballan acquired the property at auction, beginning a new chapter in its family history. His daughter, Reine Ballan, followed by his granddaughter, Marie-Josée Pierre, ensured the continuity of the estate. Today, the fourth generation, represented by Jean-Noël and Sébastien Pierre, continues this legacy while embracing modern viticultural practices.

Located on the Haut-Barsac plateau, the vineyard is planted on clay-limestone soils covered with gravel and rounded pebbles, from which the estate is believed to derive its name. This unique terroir gives the wines the freshness and elegance for which Barsac is renowned. The vineyard is planted mainly with Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc. Benefiting from the microclimate created by the meeting of the Ciron and Garonne rivers, the vines develop the noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) essential for producing great sweet wines. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand through several selective passes, ensuring that only perfectly botrytised grapes are picked.

Today, Château Caillou produces Barsac wines celebrated for their harmony between richness, freshness, and minerality. Depending on the vintage, the wines are aged for two to three years, developing aromas of honey, candied citrus fruits, white flowers, almonds, and gentle spices while retaining remarkable freshness and precision. Faithful to its Grand Cru Classé heritage, the estate remains committed to expressing the refined character of the Barsac terroir, while also producing a range of dry white wines and sparkling wines that reflect its innovative spirit.
